Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Pettineo is an organic single-variety Frappato red wine made by Arianna Occhipinti, in Sicily, Italy.
Contrada is the term used to describe a small country district, in this case Pettineo, a historic town where very elegant wines are made thanks to its soils composed of a deep layer of sea sand with a small amount of limestone rock on the surface.
To make the Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Pettineo wine, the grapes are harvested manually at their optimum ripeness. When they reach the winery, they ferment spontaneously with native yeasts in contact with their skins in cement tanks for thirty days. The resulting wine ages in large Slavic oak barrels for approximately 22 months and rests in the bottle for two more months before being released. It is not filtered or clarified.

It is a grape that may seem austere and delicate but that encapsulates the personality of its terroir, of what steps over it, of what it smells of and what you can sense from this fascinating land that Occhipinti cultivates with affection and respect like nobody else.
Pettineo: This historic contrada, a term used to refer a small district of the countryside, is located beyond Serra San Bartolo ridge; historically it has always produced very elegant wines thanks to a deep layer of marine sand (50-60 cm), with little presence of limestone rocks on the surface. Our Chiusa di Pettineo vines are nearly 60 years olds. Originally planted in a head trained or albarello system from which the previous owner then transformed into a trellised system, now with the vines climbing between the trellises into monumental heights. The wines of the Pettineo are usually fruit-driven with a more silky tannin yet possessing quite lively acidity.
